Myth Busting

01

The Range of travel on electric cars is poor

With electric cars being able to travel up to 250 miles upon a full charge, this will meet the demands for most of the UK population. The newest cars in Great Britain do an average of 10,377 miles in each of the first three years after they are registered, an equivalent of 28 miles per day (RAC Foundation, 2020) allowing the average person to do up to 9 days’ worth of driving on a single charge.

02

The cost to run electric cars is more than petrol cars

There are many assumptions that an electric car is more expensive to run then petrol and diesel cars. The average cost of running a 100% electric car is 9p per mile, in contrast, the average petrol car will cost you 19p per mile to drive (Eco Experts, 2023).

03

I won’t have the time to charge an electric car

Despite their being hesitancy towards electric cars from frequent drivers, that they may not be able to charge their car often enough, it is interesting to note that cars on average are parked 96% of the time with parked at home (73%) or parked elsewhere (23%). Therefore, there is plenty of time to charge an electric car ahead of any potential long-distance journeys for most individuals.

04

Time to charge electric cars is long

When it comes to charging electric cars, the length of time that it takes to charge depends on the speed of the charger in which you are using to charge your car. Using rapid charging speeds, you can expect for your car to be charged up to 80% in 20-60mins giving you time to take a break from driving and grab a coffee.

05

The amount of public charging ports for electric cars isn’t enough

As of the end of December 2024, there are 36,316 charging locations with 72,594 EV charging points and 106,094 connectors (Parkers, 2024). Therefore, there is plenty of travelling ports for electric car users to be able to use.

06

The speed of electric cars is low compared to petrol and diesel cars

Electric cars are often perceived as being slower than petrol and diesel cars. However, the cars which are sold here at Henrys Cars disprove this theory as: the Honda e:Ny1 can reach from 0-62mph in 7.7 seconds, the Skoda Enyaq can reach 0-62 in 8.7 seconds and the Skoda Enyaq Coupé can reach from 0-62 in 6.5 seconds. As well as the Suzuki eVitara being able to get 0-60 in as little as 7.4 seconds. Showing how nimble electric cars can be. Consistent torque throughout the range providing instant power with no “petrol lag’ leads to responsive driving throughout your journey.

07

The experience of driving an electric car is too different here

The experience of driving an electric car is highly enjoyable. Pedals and controls are almost identical to automatic petrol cars. Electric cars are almost silent therefore you can listen to the radio without being disturbed by the motor system. On top of this, electric cars drive emission free, with them generating up to 30% less towards greenhouse gases in the UK compared to petrol and diesel cars (EEA, 2023). Therefore, you can have the comfort of knowing you are helping the environment.

08

Nobody drives electric vehicles

In early 2025, fully electric cars made up over 22% of all new cars sold in the UK (SMMT, 2025). As more people begin to realise that electric vehicles are for them there’s never been a better time to make the switch.

09

You can’t drive or charge an electric vehicle in the rain

Electric vehicles are completely safe to drive and also charge in the rain with equipment and connectors designed to be weatherproof and thoroughly tested for water resistance.

10

Electric vehicles are more likely to catch fire than gas cars

Electric Vehicles actually have a lower fire risk per vehicle mile travelled compared to petrol and diesel vehicles (NTSB, 2021).
